A cryptocurrency, broadly defined, is a khung of digital tokens or “coins” that exist on a distributed and decentralized ledger called a blockchain.Beyond that, the field of cryptocurrencies has expanded dramatically since Bitcoin was launched over a decade ago, và the next great digital token may be released tomorrow.Bitcoin continues to lead the pack of cryptocurrencies in terms of market capitalization, user base, & popularity.Other virtual currencies such as Ethereum are helping to lớn create decentralized financial (DeFi) systems. Some altcoins have been endorsed as having newer features than Bitcoin, such as the ability khổng lồ handle more transactions per second or use different consensus algorithms such as proof of stake.

What Are Cryptocurrencies?

Before we take a closer look at some of these alternatives to Bitcoin (BTC), let’s step back & briefly examine what we mean by terms like cryptocurrency và altcoin. A cryptocurrency, broadly defined, is virtual or digital money that takes the khung of tokens or “coins.” Though some cryptocurrencies have ventured into the physical world with credit cards or other projects, the large majority remain entirely intangible.

The “crypto” in cryptocurrencies refers khổng lồ complicated cryptography that allows for the creation & processing of digital currencies & their transactions across decentralized systems. Alongside this important “crypto” feature is a common commitment to decentralization; cryptocurrencies are typically developed as code by teams who build in mechanisms for issuance (often, although not always, through a process called mining) & other controls.

Cryptocurrencies are almost always designed to be không tính phí from government manipulation và control—although, as they have grown more popular, this foundational aspect of the industry has come under fire. The cryptocurrencies modeled after Bitcoin are collectively called altcoins, and in some cases, shitcoins, and have often tried lớn present themselves as modified or improved versions of Bitcoin. Though some of these currencies may have some impressive features that Bitcoin does not, matching the level of security that Bitcoin’s networks achieve largely has yet to lớn be seen by an altcoin.

Below, we’ll examine some of the most important digital currencies other than Bitcoin. First, though, a caveat: It is impossible for a list like this lớn be entirely comprehensive. One reason for this is the fact that there are over 18,000 cryptocurrencies in existence as of March 2022. Though many of these cryptos have little lớn no following or trading volume, some enjoy immense popularity among dedicated communities of backers and investors.

Beyond that, the field of cryptocurrencies is always expanding, and the next great digital token may be released tomorrow. Though Bitcoin is widely seen as a pioneer in the world of cryptocurrencies, analysts adopt many approaches for evaluating tokens other than BTC. It’s common, for instance, for analysts to lớn attribute a great giảm giá khuyến mãi of importance to ranking coins relative to lớn one another in terms of market capitalization. We’ve factored this into our consideration, but there are other reasons why a digital token may be included in the list.

Types of Altcoins

Cryptocurrencies are intended for payments, transmitting value (akin khổng lồ digital money) across a decentralized network of users. Many altcoins (i.e., those that are not Bitcoin or sometimes Ethereum) are classified in this way & may sometimes be called value tokens.

There are also blockchain-based tokens that are meant lớn serve a different purpose from that of money. One example could be a token issued as part of an initial coin offering (ICO) that represents a stake in a blockchain or decentralized finance (DeFi) project. If the tokens are linked to lớn the value of the company or project, they can be called security tokens (as in securities lượt thích stocks, not safety).

Other tokens have a particular use case or function. Examples include Storj tokens, which allow people to cốt truyện files across a decentralized network, or Namecoin, which provides decentralized domain name Name System (DNS) service for internet addresses. These are known as utility tokens.

Today, while many users of crypto understand và appreciate these differences, traders và lay investors may not notice the difference because all categories of token tend to trade on crypto exchanges in the same way.

1. Ethereum (ETH)

The first Bitcoin alternative on our list, Ethereum (ETH), is a decentralized software platform that enables smart contracts and decentralized applications (dApps) lớn be built & run without any downtime, fraud, control, or interference from a third party. The goal behind Ethereum is lớn create a decentralized suite of financial products that anyone in the world can freely access, regardless of nationality, ethnicity, or faith. This aspect makes the implications for those in some countries more compelling because those without state infrastructure & state identifications can get access to bank accounts, loans, insurance, or a variety of other financial products.

The applications on Ethereum are run on ether, its platform-specific cryptographic token. Ether (ETH) is lượt thích a vehicle for moving around on the Ethereum platform & is sought mostly by developers looking to develop & run applications inside Ethereum, or now, by investors looking khổng lồ make purchases of other digital currencies using ether. Ether, launched in 2015, is currently the second-largest digital currency by market capitalization after Bitcoin, although it lags behind the dominant cryptocurrency by a significant margin. Trading at around $2,565 per ETH as of March 14, 2022, ether’s market cap is less than half of bitcoin's.

In 2014, Ethereum launched a presale for ether, which received an overwhelming response; this helped lớn usher in the age of the ICO. According khổng lồ Ethereum, it can be used to “codify, decentralize, secure và trade just about anything.” Following the attack on the decentralized autonomous organization (DAO) in 2016, Ethereum was split into Ethereum (ETH) and Ethereum Classic (ETC).

In December 2020, Ethereum transitioned its consensus algorithm from proof of work (PoW) to lớn proof-of-stake (PoS). This move is intended khổng lồ allow Ethereum’s network to run itself with far less energy and improved transaction speed, as well as khổng lồ make for a more deflationary economic environment. PoS allows network participants to lớn “stake” their ether khổng lồ the network. This process helps to lớn secure the network and process the transactions that occur. Those who do this are rewarded with ether, similarly lớn how an interest account works. This is an alternative khổng lồ Bitcoin’s PoW mechanism, by which miners receive more BTCs for processing transactions.

2. Litecoin (LTC)

Litecoin (LTC), launched in 2011, was among the first cryptocurrencies to follow in the footsteps of Bitcoin and has often been referred to lớn as “silver lớn Bitcoin’s gold.” It was created by Charlie Lee, an MIT graduate and former Google engineer.

Litecoin is based on an open-source global payment network that is not controlled by any central authority and uses scrypt as a PoW, which can be decoded with the help of consumer-grade central processing units (CPUs). Although Litecoin is like Bitcoin in many ways, it has a faster block generation rate and thus offers a faster transaction confirmation time.

Other than developers, there are a growing number of merchants that accept Litecoin. As of March 14, 2022, Litecoin has a market capitalization of $7.4 billion & a per token value of around $106, making it the 21st-largest cryptocurrency in the world.

3. Cardano (ADA)

Cardano (ADA) is an“Ouroboros proof-of-stake” cryptocurrency that was created with a research-based approach by engineers, mathematicians, and cryptography experts. The project was co-founded by Charles Hoskinson, one of the five initial founding members of Ethereum. After having some disagreements with the direction that Ethereum was taking, he left and later helped lớn create Cardano.

The team behind Cardano created its blockchain through extensive experimentation and peer-reviewed research. The researchers behind the project have written more than 120 papers on blockchain công nghệ across a range of topics. This research is the backbone of Cardano.

Due to lớn this rigorous process, Cardano seems to lớn stand out among its PoS peers as well as other large cryptocurrencies. Cardano has also been dubbed the “Ethereum killer” because its blockchain is said to be capable of more. That said, Cardano is still in its early stages. Though it has beaten Ethereum to lớn the PoS consensus model, it still has a long way lớn go in terms of DeFi applications.

Cardano aims khổng lồ be the world’s financial operating system by establishing DeFi products similar to lớn Ethereum's as well as providing solutions for chain interoperability, voter fraud, và legal contract tracing, among other things. As of March 14, 2022, Cardano has the eighth-largest market capitalization at $26.9 billion, and one ADA trades for around $0.80.

4. Polkadot (DOT)

Polkadot (DOT) is a quality PoS cryptocurrency aimed at delivering interoperability among other blockchains. Its protocol is designed to connect permissioned and permissionless blockchains as well as oracles to allow systems to work together under one roof. Polkadot’s chip core component is its relay chain, which allows the interoperability of varying networks. It also allows for parachains, or parallel blockchains with their own native tokens for specific-use cases.

Where Polkadot differs from Ethereum is that rather than creating just dApps on Polkadot, developers can create their own blockchain while also using the security that Polkadot’s chain already has. With Ethereum, developers can create new blockchains but need khổng lồ create their own security measures, which can leave new & smaller projects open to attack because the larger a blockchain, the more security it has. This concept in Polkadot is known as shared security.

Polkadot was created by Gavin Wood, another thành viên of the vi xử lý core founders of the Ethereum project who had differing opinions about the project’s future. As of March 14, 2022, Polkadot has a market capitalization of roughly $17.4 billion, và one DOT trades for $17.59.

5. Bitcoin Cash (BCH)

Bitcoin Cash BCH holds an important place in the history of altcoins because it is one of the earliest và most successful hard forks of the original Bitcoin. In the cryptocurrency world, a fork takes place as the result of debates & arguments between developers & miners. Due to the decentralized nature of digital currencies, wholesale changes khổng lồ the code underlying the token or coin at hand must be made due to lớn general consensus; the mechanism for this process varies according khổng lồ the particular cryptocurrency.

When different factions can’t agree, sometimes the digital currency is split, with the original chain remaining true to its original code and the new chain beginning life as a new version of the prior coin, complete with changes khổng lồ its code.

BCH began its life in August 2017 as a result of one of these splits. The debate that led to lớn the creation of BCH had to vì with the issue of scalability; the Bitcoin network has a limit on the size of blocks: 1 megabyte (MB). BCH increases the block kích thước from 1MB to 8MBs, with the idea being that larger blocks can hold more transactions within them, và the transaction speed would therefore increase. It also makes other changes, including the removal of the Segregated Witness protocol that impacts block space.

As of March 14, 2022, BCH has a market capitalization of around $5.5 billion and a value per token of $286.97.

6. Stellar (XLM)

Stellar (XLM) is an xuất hiện blockchain network designed khổng lồ provide enterprise solutions by connecting financial institutions for the purpose of large transactions. Huge transactions between banks & investment firms—typically taking several days, involving a number of intermediaries, and costing a good giảm giá of money—can now be made nearly instantaneously with no intermediaries & cost little to nothing for those making the transaction.

Though Stellar has positioned itself as an enterprise blockchain for institutional transactions, it is still an mở cửa blockchain that anyone can use. The system allows for cross-border transactions among any currency. Stellar’s native currency is Lumens (XLM). The network requires users to hold Lumens to be able to lớn transact on the network.

Stellar was founded by Jed McCaleb, a founding member of Ripple Labs và developer of the Ripple protocol. He eventually left his role with Ripple và went on to co-found the Stellar Development Foundation. Stellar Lumens have a market capitalization of about $4.4 billion & are valued at around 18 cents as of March 14, 2022.

7. Dogecoin (DOGE)

Dogecoin (DOGE), seen by some as the original “memecoin,” caused a stir in 2021 as the price of the coin skyrocketed. The coin, which uses an image of the Shiba Inu as its avatar, is accepted as a size of payment by some major companies, including the Dallas Mavericks, Kronos, and—perhaps most notably—SpaceX, an American aerospace manufacturer owned by Elon Musk.

Dogecoin was created by two software engineers, Billy Markus and Jackson Palmer, in 2013. Markus và Palmer reportedly created the coin as a joke, commenting on the wild speculation of the cryptocurrency market.

The price of DOGE hit an all-time high of approximately 0.74 cents during the week when Musk was scheduled to appear on Saturday Night Live. As of March 14, 2022, Dogecoin’s market capitalization is $15.0 billion and one DOGE is valued at around 11 cents, making it the 13th-largest cryptocurrency.

A memecoin inspired by a memecoin, Shiba Inu (SHIB), rose khổng lồ prominence in the fall of 2021, briefly surpassing the market capitalization of Dogecoin.

8. Binance Coin (BNB)

Binance Coin (BNB) is a utility cryptocurrency that operates as a payment method for the fees associated with trading on the Binance Exchange. It is the third-largest cryptocurrency by market capitalization. Those who use the token as a means of payment for the exchange can trade at a discount.

Binance Coin’s blockchain is also the platform on which Binance’s decentralized exchange operates. The Binance Exchange was founded by Changpeng Zhao và is one of the most widely used exchanges in the world based on trading volumes.

Binance Coin was initially an ERC-20 token that operated on the Ethereum blockchain. It eventually had its own mainnet launch. The network uses a PoS consensus model. As of March 14, 2022, Binance Coin has a $61.0 billion market capitalization, with one BNB valued at $369.48.

9. Tether (USDT)

Tether (USDT) was one of the first & most popular of a group of so-called stablecoins—cryptocurrencies that aim lớn peg their market value to lớn a currency or other external reference point khổng lồ reduce volatility. Because most digital currencies, even major ones lượt thích Bitcoin, have experienced frequent periods of dramatic volatility, Tether & other stablecoins attempt khổng lồ smooth out price fluctuations lớn attract users who may otherwise be cautious. Tether’s price is tied directly lớn the price of the U.S. Dollar. The system allows users khổng lồ more easily make transfers from other cryptocurrencies back lớn U.S. Dollars in a more timely manner than actually converting khổng lồ normal currency.

Launched in 2014, Tether describes itself as “a blockchain-enabled platform...to make it easier to lớn use fiat currency digitally.” Effectively, this cryptocurrency allows individuals lớn utilize a blockchain network và related technologies to lớn transact in traditional currencies while minimizing the volatility & complexity often associated with digital currencies.

As of March 14, 2022, Tether is the third-largest cryptocurrency by market capitalization, with a market cap of $80.1 billion and a per-token value of (you guessed it!) $1.

10. Monero (XMR)

Monero XMR is a secure, private, and untraceable currency. This open-source cryptocurrency was launched in April 2014 and soon garnered great interest among the cryptography community và its enthusiasts. The development of this cryptocurrency is completely donation-based và community-driven.

Monero has launched with a strong focus on decentralization và scalability, & it enables complete privacy by using a special technique called “ring signatures.” With this technique, a group of cryptographic signatures appears, including at least one real participant, but the real one cannot be isolated because they all appear valid.

Because of these exceptional security mechanisms, Monero has developed something of an unsavory reputation—it has been linked to lớn criminal operations around the world. Though this is a prime candidate for making criminal transactions anonymously, the privacy inherent in Monero is also helpful to lớn dissidents of oppressive regimes around the world.

As of March 14, 2022, Monero has a market capitalization of $3.3 billion và a per-token value of $181.32.

As decentralized platforms, blockchain-based cryptocurrencies allow individuals to lớn engage in peer-to-peer financial transactions or enter into contracts. In either case, there is no need for some trusted third-party intermediary such as a bank, monetary authority, court, or judge. This has the potential khổng lồ disrupt the existing financial order & democratize finance. The kích thước of the cryptocurrency space has grown exponentially in the past decade, with new innovations & a collective market capitalization of more than $1.75 trillion.

The majority of cryptocurrencies today are derived in some khung or another from Bitcoin, which uses open-source code và a censorship-resistant architecture. This means that anybody can copy and tweak the code và create their own new coin. This also means that anybody is không tính phí to join its network or transact in it.

Many cryptocurrencies have gained importance or hold the promise to do so. Dogecoin, for example, was a meme-based joke coin that reached fame when Tesla CEO Elon Musk promoted the token on social media. Aside from Dogecoin và the others listed above, several other Bitcoin forks also exist, such as Bitcoin Gold và Bitcoin SV. Other important coins include Ripple (XRP), Solana, USD Coin, and Tezos.

Despite thousands of competitors that have sprung up, Bitcoin—the original cryptocurrency—remains the dominant player in terms of usage and economic value. Each coin (BTC) was worth roughly $44,000 as of February 2022, with a market capitalization of more than $830 billion.
